For the Love of Books: A Sarajevo Story – in pictures

During the Bosnian war, a group of men and women risked their lives to rescue thousands of irreplaceable Islamic manuscripts – and preserve a nation's history. Amid bullets and bombs, this handful of passionate book-lovers safeguarded more than 10,000 unique, hand-written antique books and documents – the most important texts held by Sarajevo's Gazi Husrav Beg Library, founded in 1537. THE LOVE OF BOOKS: A Sarajevo Story, is the thrilling tale of how a group of passionate book lovers risked their lives to save the Gazi Husrav Beg Library from destruction during the siege of Sarajevo from 1992 – 1995. This is a film about the importance of books, about how libraries are the heart of our cultural identity, repositories for history and memory.

Some of these manuscripts were commissioned by the Medieval Kings to burnish their legacies. Others were captured as war booty, and handed down from one dynasty to the next.

For the past few months, eight amateur theatre groups from across the UK and Ireland have been competing in a major competition launched by Sky Arts to find the best amateur theatre groups in the country and one group, above all, worthy of the ultimate prize: the chance to open a play in London’s West End. We have seen them perform classic Ibsen and Chekhov in the quarter-finals and dramatic scenes from Shakespeare’s King Lear in the semi-finals.
